Postpartum Pelvic Floor Therapy in Denver: What to Expect at Your First Visit
You just had a baby. Your body has been through something profound, and now everyone around you is focused on the baby. But what about you?
Postpartum recovery is one of the most significant physical and emotional transitions a person can go through, and it's also one of the least prepared for. No one tells you how different it might feel from what you imagined. No one warns you that healing isn't linear, that some days you'll feel like yourself and others you won't. And very few healthcare providers are trained to meet you where you actually are in that process.
That's exactly what we do at OWN Your Pelvic Health.
Prenatal & Postpartum Care Is Our Specialty
Postpartum care isn't a service we offer on the side. It's the core of what we do and what we've built our practice around. Our team has extensive training that goes well beyond pelvic floor rehabilitation. We look at the whole person, the whole body, and the whole season of life you're in. We work exclusively with women’s health all day, every day, which means we have the most experience compared to clinics who treat other populations.
Treating the whole person means we regularly collaborate with and refer to mental health providers, functional medicine practitioners, and pediatric physical therapists, because postpartum recovery doesn't happen in isolation. Your sleep, your nervous system, your mental health, your baby's feeding and movement patterns, all of it is connected. We help you navigate that web and figure out what you actually need, not just what a standard protocol says you should need at six weeks postpartum.
We Get That Healing Isn't Linear
A lot of pelvic floor therapists send clients home with extensive exercise programs and a recovery timeline that doesn't account for real life: a baby who doesn't sleep, a body that's still regulating hormones, a mind that's processing a birth experience that may have gone nothing like planned.
We don't do that here.
Our approach is gradual, realistic, and built around your life. We're not here to hand you a list of exercises and send you on your way. We're here to help you understand what your body is doing, why it's doing it, and how to work with it instead of against it. We meet you where you are, and we move at a pace that's actually sustainable.
What Happens at Your First Postpartum Visit
Your first appointment is a full evaluation, not a quick check-in. Here's what to expect:
A thorough intake conversation covering your birth story, symptoms, goals, and how you're doing overall, not just physically
An external assessment of your posture, breathing patterns, and core coordination
An abdominal assessment to check for diastasis recti and C-section scar mobility if relevant
An internal pelvic floor assessment (always with your consent, always explained step by step)
A clear explanation of what we found, what it means, and what your treatment plan will look like
We take our time. We listen. And we make sure you leave with a realistic picture of your healing journey, not a generic one.
How Early Postpartum Can I see a Pelvic Floor Therapist?
You don't have to wait for your 6-week clearance to start the conversation. We can see you as early as the first week postpartum for an external assessment and education, and begin internal work once you've had your postpartum clearance from your OB or midwife.
The earlier you start, the better. Many postpartum symptoms are much easier to address when treated early rather than months or years down the road.
What Symptoms Can Postpartum Pelvic Floor Therapy Help With?
Leaking urine when you sneeze, cough, laugh, or exercise
Urgency or frequency with urination
Pelvic pressure or heaviness (signs of prolapse)
Pain with intercourse when returning to sex postpartum
Tailbone or SI joint pain
C-section scar sensitivity, tightness, or numbness
Diastasis recti and core reconnection
Lower back or hip pain
Difficulty returning to exercise, running, lifting, or the activities you love
Do I Have to Have an Internal Exam?
No. Internal assessment is always optional and always done with your full, informed consent. We explain every step before we do it and check in throughout. Many clients choose to start with external work only, and that is completely okay.
What Makes OWN Different?
Every session is 60 minutes, one-on-one, with a doctoral-level occupational therapist or physical therapist who specializes in pelvic health. You see the same provider every visit, so you never have to re-explain your story.
We also offer birth and postpartum doula services, so if you want continuity of care from pregnancy through postpartum, we can provide that too. And through The OWN Project, our nonprofit, we offer need-based scholarships for clients who need financial support to access care.
We are not here to fix you. We are here to help you gradually get back to the things you love, feeling confident and capable while doing it. Talk with someone on our client care team today to learn more & schedule. Call 720-509-9154 or request an appointment.
